lights out!

you've got to be joking me. d.c. is having the worst heat wave in years and what happens? our power goes out. no air conditioning, no cold water, no nothing. last night around 10:30 it just died, and it never came on again. we slept in as few clothes as possible, carefully trying not to touch as we slept so as not to raise the temperature in our apartment any higher. normally i wouldn't think it much of a problem, except that the heat wave is so bad that it doesn't even cool down at night. days are in the low hundreds (with about a million percent humidity) but nights are in the nineties. when we woke up this morning it was 87 in our apartment. too hot for the bean!

after leaving the bitchiest message in the world on pepco's answering machine (hey - i have an excuse - i'm pregnant!) i checked the pepco website, which still shows our zip code as out of power. i will be absolutely livid if i get home from another hell day at work and have to deal with a hot as hell apartment! yes, this week has been horrible at work. i think the vacation gods have conspired to make this week the worst possible week so that i will truly appreciate my 2 weeks in spain. so far it is working.

but bad week at work and hot as hell apartment and city aside, things are great. jim has had several compliments paid to him by our boss in the last few days. reading the emails makes me feel so proud of him and his intelligence and strong work ethic, and also makes me happy that others love and respect him as much as i do. we both received "awards" (really bonuses) for our contributions at work, which will come in handy while snacking on tapas, shopping for pottery, and attending flamenco shows in spain. the trip is planned, we have our reservations, and now all there is to do is to enjoy ourselves for two weeks. i can't complain!
