occupational hazard

for those who don't know, for the last month i've had some serious pain in my right shoulder and arm. if you can believe it, i injured myself breastfeeding. i guess it is all of the leaning forward and weird positions i have to be in to feed little soren, coupled with the new movements of being a mom (picking him up from his crib, putting him on the floor, changing diapers, etc.) since i feed him for like 8 hours a day, it really isn't surprising i hurt myself.

so long story short, i have seen an orthopedic surgeon, done some physical therapy, and had an mri, all to find out that i have a curved acromion bone, which predisposes me to shoulder problems. that bone is pinching my rotator cuff muscles, which slip underneath when i am doing all of my mom movements. it is called shoulder impingement syndrome, most common in women in their 40s (umm, no) and young athletes (negative). the only funny part of all of this is that every time i go to see the dr., or go to therapy, i have to laugh. i am in there with some serious athletes, all of whom have injured themselves playing hardcore sports, and here i am with a breastfeeding injury. pretty awesome.

last week the pain was so bad at night that i wasn't sleeping, so i got a cortisone injection. night time has gotten better, but i am still waiting for some relief from the pain down my arm. dr. says that if it isn't better by the end of this week, he really wants me to consider surgery. surgery? like i really have time to have surgery with a 6 week old newborn at home! are you kidding? but the only good thing is that it might actually take care of the problem. i am seriously hoping that i can just wait out this week, do some physical therapy, and things will get better. if not, thank god for health insurance. we are certainly getting our money's worth in 2007.

as for soren, he is doing well. he has been sleeping for one long(ish) stretch each night the last couple of nights. last night he went 6 hours in between feedings, which meant one period of about 4.5 hours of sleep for us. still not even close to sleeping through the night, but at least it is an improvement. of course, now that i have disclosed his new sleep patterns on the blog i am setting us up for one sleepless night. but he has been pretty fun lately. a little fussy, but he has been smiling more and been more alert during the day. i still can't believe how big he is getting. speaking of which, i hear the beast now. signing off for now...

Who knew all the perils of motherhood? I am so sorry about your shoulder. I am sure it will get better soon. Too bad the bean doesn't pay worker's comp. I need to get out there and meet that fine young man. It freaks me out that he looks like you. I can see your eyes and eyebrows and I am pretty sure he has your lips, too. Can't wait to see the dimple. It also sounds like your labor was relatively light, so you are lucking out so far. I love and miss you!
